Each year, there are more children’s books published about animals than Black and Brown people. Black and Brown people have historically been, and continue to be, underrepresented, misrepresented, or invisible in children’s literature. Black and Brown male characters are even less visible, and even fewer still, are books reflecting positive and empowered depictions of Black and Brown boys. These picture books work to counter anti-Black and Brown bias by promoting narratives and images that affirm and celebrate Blackness and Brownness. With these picture books, I hope to change perceptions, encourage self-care, and foster an understanding of the plight of Black and Brown boys and girls in America by telling their stories, celebrating their accomplishments, and connecting my students to opportunities they do not know exist. In children’s literature, every reader needs window stories" and “mirror stories. Mirrors to be able to see themselves, and windows to be able to see the lives of other people who maybe don’t look like them. This picture books give my students a chance to do just that!
