I teach social studies courses to all learners in the largest high school in a rural state. My course load currently includes Current Issues in Global Studies, a thematic contemporary issues class, World History I, which covers the emergence of ancient world cultures through the Middle Ages, and Asian Studies, a survey course on East Asia. My courses are open to all students, 10th grade and above, regardless of prior performance or reading level. Consequently, I teach many students who have an interest in history and social studies, but who do not YET possess the skills to succeed at the pre-college and college level. More than just teaching history, I feel I'm using history as a vehicle to elevate my students' aspirations and improve their potential for success at the college level.
