6-person clover tables will help my students take a more active role in their own learning. Being teenagers, they are naturally social, and this extends to the classroom. Because they learn best through discussion and hands-on projects, lecture-style learning doesn't work well for my students. However, when presented with the opportunity to work together, they not only rise to the challenge, but truly excel. We work hard in our class to develop an extensive culture of trust and collaboration. For my students, this means that they learn to count on each other, both personally and academically. Clover tables will help extend this culture even further. In Developmental Reading class, the tables will be used to host literature circles in which struggling readers can better master the skills of literature analysis. In English class, students will be given the opportunity to develop professional reading, writing and speaking skills in a safe face-to-face way. This will include peer-editing, practicing code-switching, Socratic circles, and other collaborative/cooperative learning endeavors. My 9th grade students are amazing young people, with so much passion for life. Although their cultural and financial circumstances often hold them back, and give them plenty of reasons to quit, I watch them rise up and succeed every day. They inspire me to be the best teacher I can, and I would like to give them every opportunity to be their best selves also.
