I work with a group of students who are mostly English Language Learners. Most of my students come from Africa, and range from being born in the US to immigrating as little as a few months ago. Our community is about 90% Somali, and multi-lingual. While they sometimes struggle with written communication, they are extremely creative and caring. They are always willing to share their culture with anyone who will listen. It makes my classroom such a rich learning environment! My students are some of the most joyful, helpful, and cooperative children I have met so far in my career. I work in a charter school so we are in a low-income neighborhood and work with mostly low-income students, but this never dampens their spirits. They have the benefit of having large, supportive families, so they are held accountable and have a desire for success. They work extremely hard to do their best, even when it is frustrating.
