Upon entering college as an undergraduate, I was aware of my desire to impact the lives of others. However, it was almost five years later when I realized Education was my calling. Albert Bandura and Jean Piaget agree that a child’s self esteem greatly impacts their academic success. Bandura also emphasizes that children learn by modeling and the role models they look up to directly affect their self-esteem and academic achievements. Before discovering Piaget and Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, these ideas along with a constant concern for the types of role models available to America’s youth weighed on my mind and heart. I have always wanted to be a source of strength and guidance for children. I hope to foster a classroom where students are able to address their frustrations and “facilitate discussions that involve clarifying issues”(Kauchak 2005, p.224). Nothing can be left to assumption. Teaching is a relationship between student and teacher and we are equally responsible for the outcome of the school year.
