Daily we spend time as a whole class using mindful breathing and yoga poses to help our body to calm, refocus, and recharge. Breathing deeply allows time for students to stop and think about what actions they may take and to make good choices. It allows them to calm a busy mind and a wiggly body. Mindfulness gives tools for children who may not be learning productive ways to manage stress. Yoga mats allow students their own space to move freely and safely during whole group lessons. I also want to include a few sensory items for our “Peace Place”. This is a quiet corner of the room where students can go individually to use the mindful activities they have learned in whole group for when they are struggling with big emotions. The noise cancelling headphones, comfy pillows, and fidgets will help them to focus their breathing and calm their emotions before returning to the big group, ready to learn.
