My school is in a very high poverty area of NYC. Some of my students come live in shelters, come in hungry, have stains on their clothes, and are exhausted from taking care of younger siblings or not being able to sleep because they live in such close quarters to others. Additionally, many have IEPs (individual educational plans) that are geared towards their special education requirements so they can succeed. My co-teacher and I pull very small groups to meet the student's needs and try the best we can to push them forward so they can excel. So many of my students are so far behind grade level as it is that these small groups really focus in on what they need.
