I have had the privilege of teaching in the same school for 10 years. I love the community and families. As I have gotten to know many of my past and current students, I have seen beyond them just being a student in my class. I have heard stories that break by heart but also helps me recognize how resilient a child can be. My school is a Title 1 school. We serve free breakfast and lunch to our students. Many of my kids, past, and present come from single family homes or homes where one or more parents have been incarcerated. Their families may struggle on a daily basis, but education is very important to them. My current students are 10-11 years old. They work hard in class but have the daily challenges of struggling with reading. This struggling of course rolls over into their writing class as reading resources are used to write essays. It also affects their math understanding as many of our math problems are word problems.
