The majority of my classroom are minority students coming from low-income households. One autistic student has been living in a homeless shelter up until recently. Many of students struggle to communicate verbally, therefore, I believe an iPad or tablet would provide them with an opportunity to communicate through autistic/special needs communication apps such as Proloquo or Gemini software. These types of programs encourage students to speak/sign/ or communicate through picture symbols and other phonics apps. I hope to build on their communication skills and give them the best chance to live as independently as possible. One student would benefit extremely as he does not know sign language and is unable to speak.
