As a physical educator, I recognize the importance of positive social interaction through participation in games and sports. Through games and sports, students learn many life skills, such as sportsmanship, teamwork and communication. However, many of my students often lack some of the social skills needed to communicative positively, demonstrate empathy, and show acceptance of others. Realizing this, I plan activities that give students various opportunities to work together with others in both small and large groups, while encouraging positive interactions. In addition to the many planned physical games and activities, I would like to use board games as another method for building social skills that encourage positive communication, problem solving and other critical life skills. The implementation of board game days will build upon the Social and Emotional Learning activities that are conducted each day in the regular classroom setting. I discovered just how much the students enjoyed this opportunity to interact when the gym was unavailable and I set up board game stations. Now, I plan to incorporate board games throughout the month. The benefits of playing board games are many. As stated in studies provided by the Scholastic Parents website, the benefits of board games include improved verbal communication, increased problem solving, improved focus and concentration. In addition, playing board games also expose children to life messages like those found in the games of Life, Monopoly, etc. Board games can also provide a sense of enjoyment through positive social interaction. Through this grant opportunity, I would increase the number and variety of games that I can use on special days throughout the year. This activity also supports the Social and Emotional Learning activities that are a major focus for the students here at my school.
