Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day. I am hoping to turn my classroom into one that has flexible seating options. I am starting my shift with new tables in order to create more opportunities for collaboration. A collaborative learning environment is important because it’s student-centered learning—the polar opposite of traditional, information transfer learning—it needs furniture that supports it, starting with collaborative desks and collaborative seating like these Berries Prism activity tables. Regular, rectangular desktops can’t create a close circle to allow groups of six or more students to engage in collaborative learning.
