Picture this...twenty five 13 and 14 year old boys and girls sitting quietly at their desks, eyes flickering left to right over the pages of their books. These kids aren't faking it. The room is so quiet all you can hear is the occasional turn of a page. How is this possible? A room full of middle school students silent and focused? Well the secret is they are all lost in their books. They are momentarily swept into the lives of different characters, taken away from the noise, commotion and hardships of their New York City experience. I co-teach teach a 7th grade Special Education Inclusion Literacy class at a public school in New York that receives Title 1 funding. My students primarily come from low-income families living below the poverty line. All save a few are below grade level in reading by an average of 2 years.
