My students are low income and many of them have had challenging childhoods. As a result they have issues with anxiety, depression, and controlling their anger. My students show up to school with their issues fresh on their minds before class has even started. Our program exists on a regular high school campus in order to give our students access to as much of a normal high school experience as possible. Once they have re-engaged in learning and have found strategies to manage their behavior we begin transitioning them back onto a main campus. Finding ways to engage them in academics they feel no connection to can be challenging. Historically most of these students have not experience much success in the traditional classroom. That is why creative lessons and project based learning can be so valuable to our students learning experience.
