There are over 100 English language learners in our school. 95% of these ELL students have Spanish as their first language. Many of these students do not have books at home or parents who understand the importance of reading to their child. There are students who are in the upper grades who are just learning to read. This can be tedious and boring for them. My hope is that they will be read aloud books in their native language to motivate them to want to learn to read themselves. As they hear stories read aloud to them, they can work on comprehension skills such as visualizing, questioning, predicting, and retelling. They will begin to understand book language and concepts of print.

About my class
