Our school is in a high poverty area, and many of the students have no books at home. Many are discouraged by their lack of success in reading, and have turned off to the subject. Of course, this has a devastating effect on all their academics. We use many intervention strategies to engage the students. The best one I have found is a GREAT book, such as "Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick and “I Know What You Did Last Summer", by Lois Duncan, The same students who said they hated reading have ended up loving it, due to the story, to which they can relate.
