I teach in a school that is strictly for children with special needs. My class is made up of 6 children with significant delays. There are 4 non-verbal and 2 verbal students between the ages of 9 and 10 who require the assistance of a paraprofessional on a daily basis. Their functional abilities in regard to academic skills range from kindergarten through first grade level. The learning approach for the school day is very structured and contains numerous visual supports. A specific visual schedule for these children is essential and enhances their ability to transition from one activity to the next. During their 1:1 instruction, students work on a task assigned specifically to meet their individual IEP goals. All various methodologies are aimed to achieve the best outcome for each student to have access to the curriculum. The technology available is extremely limited and restrains my ability as a teacher to provide my students with the supports they truly need to reach independence.
