Our students are first graders in an integrated co-teaching classroom in a public school in Manhattan. They are 5- , 6- and 7-year-olds from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, representative of New York City. We are an inclusive classroom, so many of our students have special needs, such as speech/language delays, sensory integration challenges, and learning disabilities. Our classroom is designed to have two teachers (one general education teacher and one special education teacher) so that lessons can be differentiated, modified and targeted to meet the needs of all of our students and assure that everyone can access the school's first grade curriculum. Our students face many challenges, both socially and academically, and we feel that all of our students learn more about respect and individual differences as a result of learning in an integrated setting.
