All of the items purchased for this campaign will be used to further develop and enhance students' inquiry, creativity, innovation, and collaboration skills with others. The educational toys and manipulatives chosen for the Liberty Library Maker Program are designed to address all components of STEM Learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). They also increase students' critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. My goal is to incorporate literature and STEM. For example, after reading "Mr. Ferris and His Wheel", by Kathryn Davis, my students will construct a Ferris wheel using pipe cleaners, building blocks, and magnetic blocks. After reading "Penny and Her Marble", by Kevin Henkes, my first-grade students will use the marble run materials to create a run that will get Penny's marble into her purple purse. Second-grade students will read, "The Origami Elephant", by Tonya Calvert. They will then use the origami paper to create animals that live in the jungle. Third-grade students will read "The Frog Who Lost His Crock", by Toni William. Then they will play the Hoppers logic game. My kindergarten students will look at pictures in "The Tangram Alphabet" book and then use tangram puzzle pieces to recreate the letters. My objective for establishing a maker space in the library is for students to be able to connect books they read to the world around them, and for them to experience making a product with their own hands while learning the processes of collaborating, planning, experimenting, and revision.
