I teach bilingual PK in a Title I school. This means that over 80% of the students come from economically disadvantaged homes. The school I work in has many programs in place to help these children overcome and conquer the challenges they face. We provide 100% of the students with free breakfast. We also work together with the food bank to send food bags with some of the kids on Friday, so that they can have food during the weekends. On top of these challenges, my students face an additional one, they come from homes in which only Spanish is spoken. All our core subjects are taught in English, so this represents an additional problem for my students. My students want to learn, but they need extra help in order to overcome the difficulty of having to learn a new language at the same time they learn new skills. They need hands-on materials and technology which they can use in order to achieve all the PK goals that our state has set out for them.
