These students are usually juniors or seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in the public and human services pathway. Many of these students are interested in being a social worker, recreation specialists or teacher and would appreciate having the opportunity to plan an event for their peers. What an excellent way engaging students in an activity that directly correlates to their career! Our public school has one of the highest Native Hawaiian enrollment rates in the State of Hawaii. According to the University of Hawaii, "The people of Molokai face a number of economic, social, and educational challenges. Unemployment in Molokai is almost double the Statewide average, and the per capita income is among the lowest in the State. Molokai has the highest percentage of young children living in poverty (48.4%)." It is located on a very rural island where we are limited to many of the conveniences others take for granted. We have no traffic lights or big box stores!
