I always strive to have a classroom full of responsible and active learners. Giving them a choice will encourage students to take charge of their learning and find what works best for them. Students will have the ability to utilize the various options in order to get the most out of their education. Stability balls, bean bags, and wobble stools might help achieve this goal. The kids will able to work anywhere in the classroom as long as they are doing just that - working. I know what you're thinking, "How on earth will these kids focus while bouncing on a yoga ball?!" Trust me. It works. I was doubtful until I saw it with my own eyes. Every classroom has it's little wiggle bugs and allowing them to wiggle in their seat instead of, let's say, at with their seat neighbor or over by the pencil sharpener makes a world of difference. Coming from a grown-up wiggle bug, trust me when I saw it works. Right now, simply allowing them to work at their desk or on the ground has already made such a difference in the classroom. Students find what is most comfortable for them while also respecting the trust I have in their ability to find a spot that keeps them focused and on task. The sight of kids working away next to their peers, on the ground, under their desk is a strangely beautiful sight to see. We all know that old-school classrooms arranged in a straight row are not for everyone. I'm aiming to find what's best for my 21st-century learners.
