My classroom consists of 22 students. It is a multicultural setting, and many of my students our second language learners. A variety of cultures and their respective languages are represented in my 3rd grade classroom (i.e Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Vietnamese, and Turkish). Developing background knowledge for the rigorous academic concepts we teach can be quite the challenge given the vast differences I have to accommodate for. Non fiction magazines with their appealing photographs, charts, maps, diagrams, etc. are a wonderful way to bridge the gap and build students comprehension skills as well as their knowledge of what is going on in the world in which they live.
