Since the students in our county have been through so much trauma the past several years, it would be incredible to continue teaching them with rich literature every day! By using quality literature I can better teach my students about the setting, characters, problem/solution, predictability, and the list could go on. With the use of high-quality picture books, each week I have been teaching vocabulary, grammar, writing, science, social studies, and so much more. Every week our second-grade team has been sharing a storybook to teach essential literary elements. Additionally, we plan weekly activities to teach across the curriculum such as art projects, social studies units, and most recently in math. These books have fully engaged the students and motivated our grade level planning. From vocabulary lessons to fun art projects, the stories have inspired me to teach through this pandemic, no matter where we might be. It brings me joy! As an example of a weekly story, this week we will read Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday. We will continue to learn about money in math and then at home, the students will build money banks as a STEM project to share on Friday. At the end of the week, we will play a quick game on Kahoot, checking for understanding. Later, the class will go on a virtual field trip to the U.S. Treasury. Needless to say, the students are excited each week to see what the "story of the week" might be! I want to continue this enthusiasm for learning through high-quality literature, but I am in need of some more books in order to teach one main book of fiction and one of non-fiction each week throughout the year. I appreciate your help!
