My school is a Project Based Learning STEAM school, and our second-trimester theme is about the human impact on the environment. My students are studying their impact on the ocean and the importance of that impact on the planet's survival. Thus, we need to see the ocean and its wildlife. Many of my students have never left San Jose, let alone seen the ocean and explored its wildlife. We are a low income/high poverty school. Many of our parents work multiple jobs and/or have unreliable transportation and cannot support us in taking our students to the aquarium. Thus, we are asking for funds to pay for our transportation to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Students will arrive at a beautiful view of the Monterey Bay- a sanctuary for thousands of ocean species. Upon arrival, students will participate in a Scavenger Hunt which includes a study on the oceans' rich treasures, why the ocean needs our protection, and the things we can do at home that can have an impact. By exposing my students to this marine sanctuary, they not only learn about the ocean, its wonders, and our impact on it, they learn more about life outside of the East Side.
