My students need modern, award-winning novels that pertain more to real life situations. I have found that with these types of books, my more reluctant readers will latch on and really want to read to the very end to find out what happens. The Hate U Give would be a powerful modern novel to pair with the study of To Kill a Mockingbird. My students will read daily The Hate U Give with the use of literature circles and a relaxed book club atmosphere. They need to be able to analyze the social injustice in this novel with other required readings and current events. An understanding of how to prevent the events that happen can lead them to make respectful and valued decisions throughout their teenage and adult lives.
