Kids love to be read to no matter their age. I find that my students are better able to connect to the historical content that I am teaching when we read a novel that brings the event and or situation to life. I have taught different grade levels using different novels over the last several years and students are always eager and engaged during the units that include novels. Alan Gratz is a wonderful historical fiction writer whose novel "Refugee" touches on several of our 7th grade world history standards, as well as current events. Students will learn about three separate children, during three different time periods, all of whom are in search of refuge from their homeland's. A Jewish boy in the 1930's seeking refuge from the Nazis aboard the S.S. St. Louis. A young Cuban girl trying to escape the riots and unrest in Cuba during the 1990's. As well as a Syrian boy desperate to find relief from the violence and destruction happening within his country today. While teaching history through novels helps the student understand my content it also supports ELA and Reading content. Students get to experience the importance of inter-discipline learning. .
