My fifth graders come from all walks of life. Their parents are in the military, are migrant workers or farmers, and other local professionals. I have students living on base and students living in trailers, some with more than one family. I have students with two parents, students with two homes, and students who have lost their families. Yet, despite their differences and circumstances, my students all come into my classroom everyday, happy to see each other and excited to tell me something new about themselves. Everyday, I am reminded that this may be the safest place they know. That, among other things, inspires me to keep being their teacher and provide that space.
