My students will be working with electrogenic bacteria that are found in all soils around the world. Microbial fuel cells generate electricity take the electrons given off from these bacteria and turn them into clean, renewable energy. The students will also learn the valuable role these organisms can play in bioremediation. The students will design and test solutions to real-world problems by creating an optimal environment for these bacteria to survive and reproduce. They will collect and analyze date and be involved in science discourse as they present their evidence. It is important for our students to be good stewards of our Earth. This experience will provide background on new possibilities of energy sources and environmental cleanup.
