We will be covering acids and bases as one of our last units this spring semester. However, we don't have the equipment to carry on an accurate lab. My biggest class has 29 students and groups of 5 would be ideal. If I split my students in groups of 5, we would need at least 6 stations. If we were to receive the funding, this equipment (especially the buret assemblies) would be used every year with our chemistry curriculum. It is important for our students to leave high school with some lab experience and I think that this titration will expose the students to important science techniques. I am requesting six buret assemblies, an acid indicator, and exam gloves to have six groups of five students participate in the titration lab. This lab will allow the students the opportunity to explore how chemists experimentally determine concentrations of acids and bases. We would use the buret assemblies to carry on a more accurate titration. We are requesting hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide to perform the traditional neutralization along with the universal indicator. At the point of neutralization, the number of hydrogen ions is equal to the number of hydroxide ions. At the end of this lab, students should have a clearer understanding of acids and bases and will hopefully understand the concept of neutralization.
