My students need dictionaries to look up words in class. We need dictionaries that go from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Currently, we only have textbooks that have a limited dictionary in the back. We need actual dictionaries so students can learn a more diverse vocabulary. We are in the technology age, but dictionaries are still important in a language classroom. It is possible that students look up words on their phones, but this impedes some of the learning that can happen. With phones so readily available, students can look up the same word over and over without actually learning it. Dictionaries encourage learning words after taking the time to look them up. Students can get distracted on their phones while looking up a word. Students may also use sites that do not give them the context of words or sites that allow them to translate paragraphs at a time which does not help them actively learn the language. I have been teaching for 5 years and I have seen how using technology to look up words so much impedes their ability to actively learn the language. We need dictionaries so students can look up a variety of words without the distractions of technology. These dictionaries will be used for many years to come for a variety of students here at our high school.
