The students in my class attend a public school for children with special needs in NYC. We are located on the top floor of a community school and must climb 5 flights of stairs many times during the day to get to our classroom, go to lunch, and get the bus. The boys and girls are from 5-7 years old and have been diagnosed as Mentally Retarded with significant language impairments. Many have Down Syndrome. They are children full of curiosity and excitement to learn, with strong personalities and ideas of their own. They communicate through their actions, a picture exchange system, and as many words as they can express clearly. We have a small class size of 12 children with 5 adults in the room. Most of the children struggle to attend to a task and may experience frustration at learning a new skill. They each receive special services like speech, occupational, and physical therapy to increase levels of independence and strength. Some of them have heart conditions and/or asthma.
