My school schedules community-building time in the classroom on a weekly basis. This is time outside of math class. The purpose of this time is to develop students' capacity for collaboration. And give students a chance to have fun during the day. Board games develop community in the classroom, by creating a context that helps teenagers overcome all the awkward angst they bring to anything they do. (Normally the only silence I experience during the day is right after I ask my students to work together on a math assignment.) I plan to introduce a variety of board games each week in my Advisory Class. This will add structure to the scheduled "community-building time" and will facilitate positive interactions between different student groups. I am also excited to bring some of these games into a more academic setting, and start conversations about problem-solving and strategy with my students. Dropmix requires players to work as a team to combine different components of songs (vocals, drums, melody, etc.) into unique remixes. Music is integral to my students' life, and I know they would be excited to express themselves through the game. Other games, like SushiGo, Rush Hour, and Suspend, require an element of advanced planning and strategy. Spot It is great for large, energetic, competitive groups, but also develops pattern recognition and spatial rotation skills. Dominoes and Chess are great strategy games -- but also essential life skills.
