Despite the six major languages that my students speak and the many different countries they came from, one aspect that most of them share is dire poverty. My students and their families lack the ability to pay for food, and 80% receive free or reduced lunch each day. Many times, my students' electricity has been shut off the night before when they were completing a homework assignment. Several have been evicted from their apartments that they share with many other family members. Roughly 5% are homeless. My school is a place where students often feel more safe than anywhere else in their lives. They receive two meals a day, heat, and electricity. Most importantly, my students are surrounded by caring teachers that believe in their abilities. Although I often cannot relate to my students' circumstances, I look forward to teaching to my students each day and sharing in their future science achievements as a member of Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST).
