I work with Title 1 students who don't have access to many experiences, materials, or resources that other children do. The majority of our students are English Language Learners and have limited English and vocabulary skills. The students in my school have a sincere love of learning, but need the opportunities to foster that love. They need to experience what it feels like to find books, authors, and series that you love, and be able to build their experiences through these books. My hope is that students will read and see what they are capable of, want to become better readers, and will truly fall in love with reading and books. That will carry them through the rest of their lives. Once you can read, you can do anything. I think every student deserves to know what that is like! Having access to quality reading materials will afford them that chance.
