By the fifth grade students are expected to be reading fluently on their grade level. This is an unreasonable task when they are not given books that interest them. Providing my students with these books will not only help improve their comprehension, but it will build a foundation for the love of reading. Creating this foundation early in life will carry them through their entire school career. The students reading levels are decreasing each year they are promoted because they are not being given materials that interest them; they see reading as something they must do, not something they want to do. Giving students access to not only books about their interests, but books on their reading level, will give them the desire to read more.
