Of my students 80% receive free/reduced lunch. Most would qualify for many scholarships, if I can get them excited about learning, and get them to believe that college is possible for them. Many of my students have not had many science laboratory opportunities. Too often non-science teachers are substitute teaching in the classroom. When they have an actual science teacher, few supplies are available to conduct experiments. I have the privilege to teach Honors Biology, Dual Credit Biology in addition to Integrated Chemistry/Physics. I believe that lab activities are the best way to engage my students. I want my students to conduct their own experiments, to do actual inquiry science. Among my students I am sure is another Ben Carson, Thomas Edison or Rosalind Franklin, I just have to provide them the appropriate learning opportunities.
