In our classroom, we let our students collaborate to build things that support our units of instruction. Students can build different things to demonstrate mastery of a particular skill. During our Community unit, we built communities out of blocks showing different parts of our community. Students used clipboards to draw diagrams and later wrote about their communities. In kindergarten, it is hard for students to sit still, so getting them up and moving and working together helps solidify their learning. The building, creating and working together to build different structures helps our students learn how to collaborate and solve problems. Using the materials to solve problems and create different inventions helps our students learn real life skills and helps promote mathematical, scientific, problem-solving and emotional growth. Students will use the blocks and Legos to build cities, communities and to foster their own creativity to come up with their own architectural designs. Through using the larger blocks, students will be developing their gross motor skills. Using the boards and Legos enables students to work in teams at their tables on measurement skills, comparison, symmetry, and estimation. Using the gears and Zoobs, students will use spatial sense and fine motor skills to build objects together that can be moved to show how simple machines work. All of the materials will help students with their scientific reasoning skills and help them test hypothesis on what will work and what will not. Building and creating encompass so many skills. Teaching children to work together collaboratively helps build our future!
