I have been teaching middle school language arts for 18 years. I love everyday and working with the students. Middle school is totally engaging and challenging. Students are at a fresh point in exploring new ideas and still have an open mind connected closely to their hearts. I teach in a small town in rural Western Wisconsin. The town is 45% free and reduced lunch but has a university and a hospital. Some students do not have dinner and some students parents are surgeons and professors. I love the challenge of the economic diversity and what that brings to how students read the world, books and each other. The school year focuses on the power of writing. The power of writing for themselves as individuals and as a community. The power of writing centers in the areas of social justice with a study of The Outsiders, I Am Malala and specific social justice activists.
