Due to overcrowding at our school, an annex building was built in the school's parking lot. Our theater classroom is housed in the annex "mini" building. The one perk of the mini building is the central air conditioning. Otherwise, the classrooms are much smaller than the rooms in the main building. Furthermore, the classrooms in the mini building do not have coat closets for the students. Most teachers fix this problem with several storage bins that students put their coats and bags in. Storage bins would limit the rehearsal space in my room and would pose a safety hazard while performing. The cube storage shelves are a better solution as they would sit flush against the wall and are stackable. Last year, while rehearsing one of the big dance numbers for our musical production of The Wiz, a student inadvertently bumped into the stacked desk chairs and a few came tumbling down. Thankfully, no one was injured. However, this posed a major safety concern. Initially, my room had desk chairs that remained stacked for most of the school year because of limited spacing. Following the incident, the chairs were removed. The portable folding benches would be the perfect replacement for the desk chairs. They are compact, take up little space and can be folded and safely stored along the wall when they aren't in use. Lastly, we are need of organizational tools that will help better manage our space. Our theater is a big open space without desks, closets or any other means of adequate storage. We have a file cabinet where I plan to manage student work and other necessary documents. Please help us to meet these very basic needs. Our students need and deserve to learn in a functional and safe environment.
