Our school is a safe and loving environment. Our focus is our students. Our goal is for all students to learn. Our school is filled with a wide variety of academic levels as well as socioeconomic backgrounds. Our public county school houses almost 550 students K-5 with 44% of those students receiving subsidized lunches. The student population is primarily made up of white children with 14% African American, 12% Hispanic, 4% multi-racial. In my 5th grade classroom, all students, regardless of their backgrounds, have the potential and desire to learn. Our school has focused this year to exposing all students with good literature and modeled a love for reading at all ages. Our principal is even completing a 180 book challenge (reading 1 book per day). She shares this with our students and the enthusiasm is contagious. However, those popular books at every level aren't so popular when you are the student who is reading two grade levels behind.
