I work in a high-poverty District of Columbia school with an increasingly high rate of English Language Learners. Every month, a new student or two arrives from overseas and begins school. While Spanish and Amharic (an Ethiopian language) are the major languages heard bouncing down the halls of our school, some students also speak French, Portuguese, and other Ethiopian dialects. My students are incredibly friendly and cohesive. While our community constantly receives new students, the school also operates as a pre-k-8; thus, many students have known each other since beginning school here in kindergarten. This helps create a unique school culture that balances assimilation and differentiation; students do a wonderful job of engaging their new peers, but also respect their peers' various experiences and heritages. I am truly humbled to work with such a diligent, friendly, and appreciative student body. They deserve the best and I aim to support them through any means possible.
