My students need to connect scientific principles with real life examples. Using these supplies will help them make that connection. My goal is to help them not only further their knowledge, but also to have them make observations and inferences about the world around them. Since I have a wide variety of ages and levels, getting them to grasp concepts is best with hands on exercises. I am most excited about the genetics unit I have ordered. They will love learning about heredity and what things effect our genetic make up. The pedigree forms and natural selection kits will help them see more clearly from where they inherit many of their traits. The environmental science student test kit will be great as the group homes are close to a dried up river bed and a large field, and near a station. The bead biology and biology toys help them visualize the concepts we read and discuss. It also helps different age groups engage. Kids get really excited when they get to experiment with science and not just read about it. Teaching all of the core subjects makes supplying each of them very difficult. The self contained kits which I am requesting will make it easier to manage since I don't have a science classroom set up. The genetics units are very engaging for students and because it is hands on they will likely engage and recall better.
