If you ask kids what their favorite part of the school day is, you will undoubtedly hear, "Recess!". Kids love to run and play, but sadly recess is among the first things to go when schools feel pressure to increase academic performance. Many teachers, myself included, have seen the opposite effect. My students need physical activity to be the best learners they can be! Flexible seating options like wobble chairs actually facilitate the learning process by helping students to maintain focus. In addition to promoting improved academic performance, flexible seating has been shown to have a positive effect on student behavior. Who cares if students are standing, sitting, or wobbling as long as learning is happening?
