The students in first grade at our school are living in poverty. We are the biggest elementary school in the city. 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Currently, due to lack of space it's difficult to have a listening center in our classroom. The classrooms are very small with the maximum amount of students per class. There is not enough room for all our classroom furniture. Students often bump into each other and it is very crowded. The Walkmans will allow students to have individual literacy instruction and eliminate overcrowding at one listening center. Students will be able to listen to stories with comfort. The majority of my students are ELL and this center will help improve their vocabulary. Many of my students families do not speak or read English. The Walkmans can be easily transported home, the kids can listen to stories on tape for homework and pleasure.
