I am a 'split librarian,' so I spend 2.5 days at one school and 2.5 days at another. My libraries are both in urban settings, and many of the students have no way to get to their public libraries because our city has little public transportation. The school library is often the only way they are able to access books. I have given them virtual library access, but only 25% of them have internet access at home to be able to use the virtual library cards. My students are especially curious about science, poetry, sports, and graphic novels, so the books we have on those subjects get a great deal of use. The science books are extremely outdated and need to be purged from the shelves and replaced with more current information. These students love to read. Every time they see me, they are excited because "it's library day! We get to get books!" Each school serves approximately 350 kids and 100% of them receive free lunch.
