Many people wrongly assume that my students will not make it to college. I know otherwise. During my time as an AVID teacher, I have seen countless students overcome tremendous odds and attend university. You can find them today in places like UCLA, UC Berkeley and Stanford, to name a few. Our school is small as far as high schools go. Everyone knows each other and many of my students have been going to school together since preschool. We live in a rural, agricultural community and many of my students' parents work in the fields. Like many communities, our town struggles with gang violence and drugs, but there are far more success stories than sob stories. I believe our AVID program is one of these successes. Every year we send 50+ students from our program on to four year colleges. Our goal is to help kids prepare for and attend four year universities. Help this years class visit San Diego!
