My freshmen are amazing. Bright, energetic, and still excited about being in high school. They aren't afraid to ask questions and, even better, they're not afraid to be wrong. I want to maintain their excitement for literature and stimulate their creativity and, unfortunately, Common Core calls for primarily non-fiction texts that can seem dry and dense, like an old fruitcake. I don't eschew required texts in favor of fiction, but I make an extra effort to include titles that titillate and stories that feed the fires of their imaginations. My school is perched on the edge of Florida's sparkling Gulf Coast and my students attend school amid palm trees, eternal sunshine, and adorable lizards. In fact, sometimes the sun shines so bright that the students are blinded to the concerns and plights of less-privileged communities and cultures. Reading, analyzing, and researching different aspects of Alexie's novel can help develop my students' capacity for empathy and kindness.
