We are a wonderfully diverse classroom in Oakland, CA that beautifully mirrors the rich diversity of our nation. My students are twenty-four of the most kind, curious adorable five year olds that you have ever seen. After years teaching, I transitioned to help coach other teachers towards success. When I did, I gave all my materials and lovingly assembled library away to other teachers. And now I've joyfully returned to the classroom and have to completely start over. My incredible students come to a classroom with many empty bookshelves that I am slowly trying to build into a rich world of reading. Our district is low-income with over seventy percent of our students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. That means there are simply not enough resources to provide the books these wonderful students deserve.
