My students attend a public high school in a lower-middle class area. Many are minority students that will be the first in their family to pursue college, and in some cases, they will be the first to graduate from high school. Armed with clever wit and a wisdom beyond their years, my students are bright-eyed, intelligent young adults who crave literature that is both academically challenging and relevant to their lives and personal experiences. This novel satisfies that desire, and they are having so much fun reading and analyzing it that they don't realize they are learning along the way.
