The books I have requested are essential to help students develop a passion for reading. By using books on students reading levels, they are able to read them independently, with a partner, or I could use them as a class read aloud. The classroom library I currently have is outdated and does not include the high-interest books that students love to read. If the books offered to students do not look interesting to them, there is a less likely chance that they will not want to read them. While I do teach that we should never judge a book by its cover, for 3rd graders, it's the cover of a book that draws them into the story. Since I teach in a Title I school, many students do not have books to read at home. Studies have shown that the more students read at home improves their overall academic performance. Therefore, I allow students to check books out of my classroom library to read at home with their parents. Unfortunately, many times these books don't always come back, which takes a toll on the books available for students to check out. Since there is rarely money to replenish classroom libraries, I replace most of the books with my own money. The Social Studies materials that I have requested correlate to the newer Social Studies standards that the state has implemented. We have not received new social standards curriculum in fifteen years, therefore, I have very little to teach the new standards, which focuses heavily on geography and American History. Thank you for taking the time to read about my project and for considering to donate.
